Description
This work is only the first part of a comprehensive history of the Company of Jesus written by Bartoli. It covers the life of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and the Jesuit Institutes and Constitution. Subsequent parts of the larger work cover the history of the Jesuits in Asia and Europe. The frontispiece is an engraving of Ignatius by Francois Cars. The book is 8.75 inches in height and is in the quarto format. An English translation of the title is The Life and Institute of St. Ignatius, Founder of the Society of Jesus, in Five Books.

Bartoli’s work is notable in that the original, published in 1650, was written in Italian. The Jesuit Louis Janin (Ludovico Ianini) is responsible for this Latin translation of Bartoli’s work.
