Comments

Versions of the “Gettysburg Address” were immediately published in newspapers. This printing of Lincoln’s address in Everett’s book is virtually its first publication in book form. Scholars have discovered only one extremely rare16-page pamphlet publication preceding Everett’s book in which the “Gettysburg Address” was printed. This pamphlet is called “The Gettysburg Solemnities” and was published by the Washington Daily Chronicle. Everett’s book was originally issued in printed wrappers, but Everett had some cloth-bound copies made to give to dignitaries and friends. This item is one of those cloth-bound copies.
