Abstract

Speaking and listening instruction in middle grades classrooms often takes the shape of highly structured conversation tasks. In this article, the authors explore the speaking and listening opportunities afforded when students play a narrative-based board game. Collaboratively built, imaginative game worlds allow students to use conversation and discussion skills in authentic and engaging ways. Through this research, the authors revise their thinking about how to create environments for middle school students’ speaking and listening practice.
