Abstract

This guidebook presents the philosophical and social bases for the concepts in the novel Emile or On Education. It includes, chapter by chapter, a plot summary of the novel, presentation questions concerning the main argument in that section of the plot, a short selection or two from the writings of the philosopher who inspired that section of the plot, and discussion questions concerning the writings. It will lead students, whether by themselves or with the guidance of an instructor, whether individually or in groups, deep into an exploration of philosophy, allowing them to construct their own ideas and opinions based on their new knowledge.
