Comments

The book was printed by the important American printer and book designer Daniel Berkeley Updike, who did much to increase the quality of book design in the United States in the early 20th century. It was printed at Updike’s famous “Merrymount Press,” as indicated in the book’s colophon. This book was named as one of the “50 Books of the Year” (1931) by the American Institute of Graphic Arts. The papal coat of arms on the title page was designed by the American heraldist Pierre de C. la Rose. The distinctive cover of the book—the marbled cloth cover and red morocco leather binding—was created by the Harcourt Bindery of Boston.
