Description

This book is a collection of engraved portraits and biographical essays of the Jesuit Superior Generals. The collection includes biographical subjects from the establishment of the Jesuit order to the time of the book’s publication. It is a large, unpaginated, folio volume, about 16.25 inches tall. An English translation of the title is Images of the Superior Generals of the Society of Jesus.

The book is printed in both Latin and Italian, and has separate title pages in each language. Fourteen of the engraved portraits are by Westerhout. One portrait is engraved by Johann Jakob Frey (1681-1752), once a student of Westerhout. The last three portraits, which are dated after 1748, are engraved by Giovanni Antonio Faldoni (about 1690-1770). Each engraving of a Jesuit Superior General faces a page of Latin and Italian text in double columns. The book is also known by its Italian title, Ritratti de' prepositi generali della Compagnia di Gesù.
